It was a few days after an old vermonter friend of his passed, and we were sitting up in the cupola (a small room on my grandparents property sitting on top of our barn, 5x8 feet) where we can see Okemo, Killington and more. This old friend, Allen, was a symbol for my grandfather... contkerrywessell (2 months ago) Replycont... as I see it anyway. He told me about the time Allen saw these two guys trying to carry a cast iron stove (heavy!). Allen was 70 at the time. These two guys, they are huffing, struggling. Allen says, "HEY! You two can't even carry that stove?!" and then proceeds to pick up the whole thing on his back and moves it to where they want it. Now, the catch is that this injury ends up causing his death a while later. But he couldn't admit injury after emasculating two grown men... contkerrywessell:con't... so he didn't say a word. On one hand, Allen--the man carrying the stove--is being a jerk right? He just emasculated two grown men, yet he's helping in a bullheaded way... so much so that no one else but him is doing any work. It's sort of a double edged sword. There's nothing wrong with being masculine, but there are trade-offs, catches, things to be wary of. So far, it looks and sounds like something that would be really interesting.CONVERSATION TWOscarlettamoretti:My understanding of this piece would suggest a statement on how we let situations progress further and further until we see there is no possible way to continue any longer, instead of simply not participating in these situations when we can clearly see that from the beginning.What was the original intention?Also, this looks like it would have been fun (albeit somewhat tedious as things progressed) to make. Are all your pieces sculpture/installations?

Este puertorriqueño nacido en 1941 aprendió guitarra antes de entrar en la escuela primaria, enseñado por su padre, y a los 11 años ganó un concurso con una banda dirigida por él. En esta época comienza a estudiar saxo alto y trompeta en la Academia de Música Jose Quinton. A los 15 años se muda con su familia a New York, donde continuó estudiando trompeta, tanto en su escuela como con el legendario Carmine Caruso. También por esta época es que forma una banda, "Los Satélites", con Chu Hernández y Joe Quijano. En 1958 comienza su carrera como músico profesional al entrar en la nueva orquesta de Quijano.Los siguientes 7 años lo vieron como trompetista, guitarrista y bajista de una gran cantidad de héroes y heroínas de la música latina, como Willie Rosario, Charlie Palmieri, la Orquesta Riverside de Ray Barreto y Tito Rodríguez, además de escribir arreglos para temas de Rosario y Willie Bobo. En 1965 debuta con su propia orquesta, con la que saca dos discos en el mismo año, la segunda de ellas a través de un nuevo sello, Fania, propiedad del músico Johnny Pachecoy el abogado Gerald "Jerry" Masucci.Siendo que a comienzos de la década Valentin contribuyó con arreglos para algunos temas de Pacheco, fue lo más natural que editara sus discos por el nuevo sello de este. Y a pesar de que Bobby Valentín se mudo con su orqueta a Puerto Rico en 1968, seguía haciendo frecuentes viajes a New York para grabar para Fania, además de trabajar y arreglar temas para la banda del sello, la Fania All-Stars, a la que ayudó a definir el sonido a través de su bajo, en discos clasicos de la década del ´70 como el Tributo a Tito Rodríguez o el disco en vivo en el Yankee Stadium.En 1978 comienza a grabar para su propio sello, Bronco Records, a través del cual grabó "La boda de ella", tema que se convirtió en una de los más importantes de su carrera. A pesar de que su colaboración con Fania continua hasta bien entrados los ´90, Valentin se preocupo de armar un buen conglomerado de artistas en su propio sello, incluyendo nombres del calibre de Willie Rosario y la Orquesta Mulenze. En la actualidad, Valentin sigue girando con su banda por el mundo, además de continuar con su carrera de arreglador, tanto en Puerto Rico como en New York, trabajando sobre material de Willie Colon, Ismael Miranday Cheo Feliciano entre muchos otros.
